I know Bristol samplers did not appear until the 1860s. The pattern of Mary Purdye in my store is from 1815. Lydia was a very accomplished stitcher and the back is almost as perfect as the front. There is an upper and lower case alphabet with the "J" omitted. The lower case alphabet uses the old English long "s" in the shape of an "f". There
