The goal was to incorporate the dial with the handset. This presented a huge challenge as the dials of the time created a huge buldge around the centre of handset making it very uncomfortable to use. A breakthrough came in 1960 when the "space saver dial" was created. The fingerstop of this dial could actually move eliminating the need for a large gap
